According to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, President Hwang Ju-ho held a meeting on the 16th with about 40 key executives, including the vice president of technology and the heads of five nuclear power generation headquarters and 15 power plants.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, the largest power generation company in South Korea, operates about 20 nuclear power plants and is responsible for more than 30% of the electricity generated in the country.
The meeting was held to review the on-site response status of the power supply and demand countermeasure period for this summer, which was set to end on September 6th. The long period of extreme heat in August caused a sharp increase in electricity demand, forcing power companies to take emergency measures.
At 6 p.m. on the 13th, domestic electricity demand hit a record high of 94.6 gigawatts. In response, power companies including Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power increased their power generation to their maximum levels, reaching a peak of 1.5 GW.
Although the government has a reserve power supply capacity of more than 10 gigawatts to cope with the emergency, this does not mean that we can rest easy. Many typhoons are expected to occur from next week onwards, and there is a possibility that power facilities will be damaged.
The participants in the meeting promised to constantly check and inspect the nuclear power plants to ensure stable operation in preparation for unexpected natural disasters such as typhoons.
President Phan told the meeting participants, "We are experiencing extremely hot weather every day, making the stable supply of electricity through the operation of nuclear power plants more important than ever," and added, "We will continue to be tense for the remaining period of the electricity supply and demand countermeasures."
I ask that you maintain your current posture without moving."
