"Even before Kishida decided not to run in the LDP presidential election, the Japanese side had expressed its intention for Prime Minister Kishida to visit Korea," a senior official in the South Korean presidential office said on the same day.
"This matter has been discussed since I announced that I would not run, but nothing has been decided yet," he said. "President Yoon is a second-former in shuttle diplomacy between Korea and Japan, and he is open to Kishida at any time."
"Kishida is considering a plan to visit South Korea before he leaves office to meet President Yoon and hold a summit," Kyodo News quoted a diplomatic source as saying.
However, Kyodo News reported, "There is critical public opinion in South Korea against the Yoon administration over the registration of the Sado Gold Mine as a World Heritage Site, so it is possible that the South Korean government may view this visit negatively."
"It cannot be ruled out," he said, explaining that "the possibility of holding a summit meeting is fluid."
