South Korean Ministry of Defense holds first meeting to deal with ”Fei News” during UFS exercise... ”Steps to deal with false information”
The South Korean Ministry of Defense will hold its first related agency meeting to counter Feik News on the 22nd as it conducts the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) defense drill to prepare for a potential North Korean invasion.
The purpose of the conference is to establish a security system that integrates the civilian, government, and military, and to enhance crisis management capabilities against gray zone operations and military provocations by North Korea.
On the 20th, the Ministry of Defense held a cooperation meeting with the National Intelligence Service, the Ministry of Unification, the Ministry of the Interior and Security, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea Communications Commission, among others, to discuss "countermeasures against false information in wartime."
The meeting discussed measures to combat news and false information. The recent Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas armed conflict were cited as examples of how to respond quickly to false information in wartime.
The importance of coordinating the efforts of relevant agencies in the response process was emphasized. The meeting also emphasized the need for government agencies to work together to combat the spread of false information in cooperation with allies.
The role of the defense ministry in providing accurate information to the public and the international community in a timely manner was also discussed. The Ministry of Defense said the meeting was an important step towards effectively combating disinformation in the future.
Ahead of the UFS exercise, President Yoon Seok-yeol said that the UFS exercise will prepare a response posture to North Korea's gray zone provocations, such as the dissemination of false information and fake news.
On the 19th, the Ministry of Defense held a meeting of 11 government and related agencies, including the Defense Agency's Chemical, Biological and Radiological Protection Command and the Defense Agency's Medical Command, to discuss "Post-event management support measures in the event of a North Korean nuclear attack."
The meeting included reviewing the military's response posture in preparation for the possibility of North Korea using nuclear weapons, discussing support capabilities and measures for chemical, biological, radiological and medical forces, and expanding the government's overall nuclear post-incident management capabilities.
During the UFS exercise, the Ministry of Defense also held a joint training session with the private sector, government, military, police and fire departments around Seoul Olympic Park to improve joint defense capabilities.
The UFS exercise is part of a joint effort with the ROK and US agencies to conduct comprehensive counterterrorism training at a multipurpose facility. The exercise also increases the number of joint US-ROK field maneuver training exercises from 38 last year to 48 this year, covering land, sea and air territories.
In particular, the Army's joint air assault and attack operation training and the Air Force's joint air-to-air live firing and air-to-ground bombing training, among other brigade-level training, were significantly expanded from four times last year to 17 times this year.
"Our military will protect the lives and safety of our people against any provocation or invasion by North Korea," Defense Minister Shin Won-sik said.
"We must constantly maintain overwhelming capabilities and posture," he said, emphasizing that "through this exercise, we will improve the government's overall ability to wage total national war."
The South Korean government's exercise ended on this day, but the US-ROK joint military exercise will continue until the 29th, assuming new situations and circumstances.
