”Bucheon Hotel Fire”... Air mattress flips over, two people jump to their deaths (South Korea)
Two of the seven people killed in a hotel fire in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do, jumped from the seventh floor onto air mattresses, sparking controversy over the function of the air mattresses.
According to fire authorities on the 23rd, a fire broke out at around 7:34 pm on the 22nd at a hotel in Jung-dong, Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do. The fire broke out in room 810 (7th floor) of the 9-story hotel.
The first report of smoke coming from the building was received five minutes later at 7:39 pm. The first team from the Bucheon Fire Station arrived at the scene at 7:43 pm, four minutes after the report, and five minutes after their arrival
At 7:48 pm, an air mat was installed on the first floor of the hotel. The air mat installed by the Bucheon Fire Department was designed to save someone from jumping from a height of 10 stories. It was 4.
The air mattress is 5 meters long, 7.5 meters wide, and 3 meters high. When uninflated, it weighs 126 kilograms. It is usually loaded onto a fire engine or similar vehicle and deployed by 4 to 10 rescuers.
Five people moved and set up the mattress. As the hotel was engulfed in flames and smoke, the situation became tense. At 7:55 pm, seven minutes after the mattress was set up, two men and women from a guest room on the seventh floor jumped out. However,
The woman who jumped first fell on the edge of the air mat instead of the center, and at that moment, the force of the recoil caused the air mat to flip over.
The man jumped off the cliff just a few seconds later, without anyone being able to rescue the woman.
The two men fell to the ground with a strong impact. They were taken to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, but died. A man and woman who were waiting for rescue jumped onto air mats that had been set up relatively quickly after the fire broke out.
Despite jumping out of the vehicle, the man died, raising questions online about the installation of the air mattress.
The video showed the air mattress upside down. This led to claims that the air mattress was installed upside down from the beginning, but this was not found to be the case.
A Bucheon Fire Department official explained, "The air mattress was set up properly, but it flipped over after the woman fell." Fire officials said the woman who jumped first was not in the center of the air mattress.
He estimated that the mattress flipped over because it fell too close to the edge of the bed, but acknowledged that it is rare for an air mattress to flip over like this, even when jumping from a high-rise building.
A Bucheon Fire Department official said, "The air mats we installed yesterday were made for the 10th floor, so even if someone jumped from the 8th floor, there would be no problem.
"The woman fell over the edge, causing the air mattress to flip over, which is not a common occurrence," he said.
Lee Sang Min, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, visited the scene of the fire today and
When asked, "Was there no one to grab the air mat?" Cho Seong-ho, head of the Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Prevention Headquarters, replied, "There were not enough personnel at the time, so it seems they were unable to grab the air mat."
Seven guests were killed in the fire, and 12 people were injured, including three in serious condition, and were taken to hospital for treatment. The fire did not spread to the entire hotel building, but toxic gases were released inside.
It spread rapidly and the damage was exacerbated by the lack of sprinklers in the guest rooms.
