Expert: ”Air mattress installation is problematic, but it may also be defective”... Hotel fire in Korea
On the 22nd of this month, a hotel fire in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, killed seven people, two of whom jumped onto air mattresses.
Professor Gong-woon said, "There was clearly a problem with the air mattress," raising suspicions of inappropriate installation locations and defective products.
In an interview with CBS Radio on the 26th, Professor Yom said, "The installation site was a ramp, but
"Air mats should not be installed on ramps," he said. "Even if air mats are installed on flat ground, the chances of survival are greatly reduced if you jump from a high-rise building, but if they are installed on a building platform,
"According to the fire service's air safety mat performance certification and product inspection technical standards, the building height must be 15 meters or less," he said.
When asked by the moderator, "Does it mean that air mattresses are not allowed to be used in buildings that are 15 meters or taller?"
When asked about this, he replied, "It's not that we're trying to stop people from jumping off, but rather that we should only use it at heights of 15 meters or less because safety cannot be guaranteed."
"The chances of survival are high up to the fourth or fifth floor," he added. Professor Yom said that when the air mattress turned over immediately after one of the people jumped out of the building, "the manual says that the number of people who jumped out of the building is 100," and
"The instructions state how to grab the air mattress," he said, adding, "As a result, a very unusual situation occurred in which the air mattress was flipped over."
Professor Yom said, "There are no clear regulations or manuals for air mattresses."
The expiration date for the product is 7 years, but the product is guaranteed to last for 7 years. However, I decided to reuse it and used it for more than twice that period. This would naturally reduce the elasticity of the rubber, and air would be injected again.
In some cases, the air mattress may not be injected evenly or may even leak out. Therefore, it is possible that the air mattress was defective."
The first-arrival team from the Bucheon Fire Station arrived at the scene at 7:43 p.m., four minutes after the call, and set up air mattresses on the first floor outside the hotel at 7:48 p.m.
However, one of the two people in need of rescue in the seventh floor cabin fell to the edge of the air mattress, causing it to flip over due to the force of the fall. The other person jumped out two or three seconds later and fell to the ground.
Both were taken to hospital in cardiac arrest but died later.
