The report said that they had raided an illegal bitcoin mining facility. Illegal bitcoin mining has become a major problem in the region as miners take advantage of relatively cheap electricity prices in Southeast Asia.
According to the China Morning Post, the attack took place on the 23rd of this month, and illegal mining activities were blamed for the continuous power outages in the village for over a month.
Authorities began investigating after receiving reports from residents that "unexplained power outages have been occurring since mid-July." The authorities, in cooperation with the local police, were able to trace the cause of the blackout to one house.
Jamnong, a provincial security officer at the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), said he had been investigating the house and discovered it was being used as a Bitcoin mining base.
Chanwong said the home's electricity consumption was abnormally high, but its bills were suspiciously low, suggesting miners were illegally stealing electricity to run their mining activities.
The bitcoin mining equipment was found to have been installed by a company that had been renting the house for about four months. Authorities said the severe power outage prevented mining operations from fully operating.
However, no arrests were made during the raids, and the miners reportedly fled after their activities attracted law enforcement attention.
The investigation is planned to continue.
