Japan's Ministry of Defense announced that a Chinese military aircraft briefly violated Japanese airspace on the morning of the 26th, forcing Self-Defense Forces fighter jets to scramble.
According to NHK, the Japanese Ministry of Defense announced that a Chinese Y-9 intelligence gathering aircraft had landed in southwestern Japan that morning.
The Japanese side responded by scrambling fighter jets from the Air Self-Defense Force, but the Chinese military aircraft had already left Japanese airspace.
Japan Self-Defense Force fighter jets took warning measures against the Chinese military aircraft. NHK reported that this was the first time that a Chinese military aircraft had been confirmed to have violated Japanese airspace, and that the Ministry of Defense had notified the Japanese government of the Chinese aircraft's flight.
"We are analyzing the purpose of the attack and continuing to monitor and be vigilant," the Defense Ministry official said. "The Chinese military is stepping up its military activities in the East China Sea and other ocean areas," he said.
"At this stage, it is unclear what their intentions are (to violate Japanese airspace), but we will take all possible precautions and maintain surveillance," he said.
