A Hong Kong man was arrested for smuggling 20kg of methamphetamine from Canada into South Korea by hiding it in a suitcase. The Incheon District Prosecutors' Office's Violent Crimes Investigation Division (Chief Park Sunmin)
On the 2nd, it was announced that a Hong Kong man, Mr. A (40s, male), had been arrested and indicted on suspicion of violating the Law on the Control of Legal Substances. Mr. A was aboard a passenger plane bound for Incheon International Airport from Toronto Airport in Canada on the 12th of last month.
He is suspected of boarding a flight and entering South Korea with 20 kg of methamphetamine (worth 6 billion won (approximately 658.2 million yen), enough to administer to 660,000 people at the same time) hidden in a suitcase.
He put the methamphetamine in eight plastic bags, hid it in his bag, and checked it in as checked baggage. Customs officials at Incheon Airport X-rayed the checked baggage of the aircraft and found Mr.
Methamphetamine was found in the bag. Mr. A was then caught as he was trying to collect the bag at the baggage claim area and handed over to the prosecutors. All 20kg of methamphetamine was confiscated.
A prosecutor said, "20kg of methamphetamine is the largest case of smuggling in airplane baggage to date," and "We are responding to the increasingly evolving nature of illegal drug smuggling crimes."
"We will continue to work closely with relevant agencies to provide assistance to these victims."
