”Too much pain” High-risk pregnant woman transported 440km from Jeju to Incheon due to lack of doctors - South Korea
It has been revealed that a high-risk pregnant woman traveled more than 400 kilometers from Jeju, South Korea to Incheon due to a shortage of medical personnel.
According to Incheon Inha University Hospital and Yonhap News on the 11th, a pregnant woman named A (30) was admitted to the hospital at 11 am on the 9th of this month due to the risk of premature birth.
At the time, there was a vacant bed in the neonatal intensive care unit at Jeju National University Hospital, but there was reportedly only one doctor in charge due to a mass strike by medical residents.
After receiving a call from the Jeju Fire and Safety Headquarters that Mr. A needed to be transferred to another hospital, they dispatched a fire HYERI helicopter and transported Mr. A and the medical team to the area of Chungcheongnam-do.
Due to fuel issues, he had to switch to a Hyericopter again and head to Inha University Hospital. The total travel time for Mr. A was 3 hours and 30 minutes.
During the transfer, the painkillers wore off, and Ms. A endured the pain while breaking out in a cold sweat. She was worried both physically and mentally that she might give birth prematurely.
After being transferred to Inha University Hospital, A was given the opportunity to take medication because there were medical staff caring for newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit and a medical team in the obstetrics and gynecology department treating high-risk pregnant women.
With the help of treatment, she was able to overcome the crisis. Ms. A's husband, Mr. B (31), told Yonhap News, "A doctor accompanied us when we were transferred from Jeju National University Hospital, but he was also the one who checked the volume of the IV drip.
"I was worried because they were inexperienced and seemed unfamiliar with operating the relevant equipment and caring for patients," he said, explaining why he had no choice but to move to Incheon.
He continued, "The transportation time was very painful, but the professor (who examined my wife)
"I want to make sure they know how grateful I am," she said. "We have overcome this crisis, but we must put measures in place to prevent this from happening to another pregnant woman."
