A middle school in Seoul that opened 70 years ago has been decided to close due to a decline in the number of students. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Kyoung Seo Middle School in Gangseo-gu has decided to close.
It has been decided that the schools will be consolidated and closed on March 1, 2027. They will stop accepting new students from the first semester of next year.
The government issued a final public notice regarding the planned consolidation and closure of schools, stating that it will "promote consolidation and closure in order to optimize the size of small schools and normalize the management of the educational curriculum, thereby guaranteeing students' right to learn."
Gyeongseo Middle School, a public middle school in Gayang-dong, Gangseo-gu, was opened in 1950 after being separated from Gyeonggi Industrial Middle School.
It was relocated to Gongdeok-dong, and then to its current location in Gayang-dong, Gangseo-gu in 1993. However, due to a decline in the birth rate in the neighboring apartment complexes, the number of new students continued to decrease, and Gyeongseo Middle School became a small school.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, there were 27 first-year students at Gyeongseo Middle School this year. In 2022, the number is expected to increase to 34, and in 2023, the number is expected to increase to 36.
Following the previous high of 100,000, the number of cases remained extremely low.
