"The government believes that North Korea has opened its uranium enrichment facilities to the public and is accelerating its nuclear capability and warfighting program," a spokesman for the South Korean Ministry of Unification said at a press conference that morning.
"We strongly condemn North Korea's illegal nuclear weapons development, which is a clear violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions, and is a fundamental violation of the international order to protect the Korean Peninsula and the international community," the spokesman said.
"It is a serious threat to world peace and under no circumstances will we or the international community tolerate North Korea possessing nuclear weapons, and North Korea must recognize this," he said.
"We solemnly warn that any nuclear threats or provocations from North Korea will be met with an overwhelming and powerful response from our government and military, based on the integrated extended deterrence posture of the robust ROK-U.S. alliance," it said.
" He also emphasized, "The North Korean regime must once again realize that there is nothing to be gained from nuclear weapons, and must immediately embark on the path to freedom, civilian life, and peace for the people of North Korea.
"We call on them to immediately respond to the denuclearization dialogue proposed by our government," he added.
The report said the General Secretary visited a nuclear weapons research institute and a weapons-grade nuclear material production facility and gave on-site guidance.
