Patient with amputated finger refused treatment at 4 hospitals... 90km away in Jeonju, South Korea
On the second day of South Korea's mid-autumn celebration holiday, a patient who had lost a finger was refused treatment by four hospitals in the Gwangju area and sent to a hospital in Cheolbuk, more than 90 kilometers away.
At around 1:31 pm on the 15th, a man in his 50s had his finger caught in a doorway at an apartment in Gwangju, resulting in his finger being amputated.
In South Korea, the number of cases in which it took ambulances more than an hour to transport emergency patients to hospitals has increased by 22% from last year.
The ambulance team contacted four medical institutions, including two university hospitals, one general hospital, and one orthopedic hospital, but none were able to accept the patient.
There was no hospital that could accept the patient. The hospital was told that they did not have doctors who could perform the reattachment surgery or that they were absent.
The ambulance team contacted a medical institution in the North Jeonbuk region and transported the patient to an orthopedic clinic in Jeonju, about 94 kilometers away by car, about 1 hour and 8 minutes.
The patient arrived at Jeonju Hospital at around 3:37 pm, about two hours after the accident, and is currently undergoing treatment, including reattachment surgery. His life is not in danger.
