Korea Transportation Safety Agency installs pedal drive recorders in Seoul taxis... ”The most reliable way to detect sudden acceleration”

Recently, there has been an increase in traffic accidents in Korea that are said to have been caused by "sudden acceleration." However, there has been no clear evidence to support the determination that such accidents were caused by sudden acceleration.
On the 15th, TS announced that it would experimentally install brake pedal black boxes (dash cams) in 155 taxis owned by 14 taxi companies in Seoul.
The project was launched following the July accident at City Hall Station, which has become a social issue. It aims to determine the cause of the accident, including the sudden acceleration of the accelerator and brake pedals.
The purpose is to analyze accidents caused by pedal misapplication. By analyzing dashcam footage that records the pedal movement, it will become clear whether the accident was caused by pedal misapplication.
The National Forensic Service of Korea submitted a report titled "The Sudden Acceleration of Suspicion in the Last Five Years" to Kwon Young-Jin, a member of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee,
According to the "Analysis of Sudden Accidents," out of the 364 reports of suspected sudden acceleration received from 2020 to June this year, 43 cases were excluded, as the car was completely destroyed and could not be analyzed.

The installation targets were selected from taxi transport companies with a high accident rate in Seoul.
The pedal drive recorder installed in the project is capable of taking night-time pictures and recording audio, and can record the driver's pedal operation and the vehicle's driving status.
Through this trial project, the Corporation will prepare accident prevention measures such as analyzing the driver's pedal misidentification behavior patterns, and will provide immediate video footage in the event of a suspected sudden acceleration accident.
The corporation plans to support accident certification in the event of an accident.
