POSCO donates 2 billion won to the ”Former Forced Laborers Support Foundation” in South Korea
The South Korean steel giant POSCO has donated 2 billion won (approximately 215 million yen) to the Foundation for Victims of Forced Mobilization by Japanese Colonial Forces (hereinafter referred to as the Foundation), which was established under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to provide compensation to former forced laborers.
POSCO announced on the 19th that it had "decided through a board of directors resolution on the 13th of this month to donate 2 billion won to the foundation and has now done so."
A POSCO official said, "As one of the companies that has grown thanks to funds from the claims settlement agreement with Japan, we have decided to donate 2 billion won to the foundation in order to make greater contributions to society."
In 2012, POSCO's board of directors decided to donate a total of 10 billion won (approximately 1.074 billion yen) to the foundation.
POSCO contributed 3 billion won (US$3.2 million) in 2016 and 2017, respectively, and 4 billion won (US$4.3 million) last year.
POSCO has completed its pledge of 10 billion won by donating 100 million won to the surviving former forced laborers, who are aging.
