South Korean Foreign Minister: ”Multilateralism and UN activities should be further strengthened”
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol said on the 27th (local time) that "multilateralism and the activities of the United Nations must be further strengthened to respond to global challenges."
Minister Cho delivered a keynote speech at the UN General Assembly general debate held in New York on the same day, saying that he will work to restore multilateralism and strengthen the norm-based international order.
Cho expressed Korea's willingness to contribute. It will be the first time in eight years that a South Korean foreign minister will attend the UN General Assembly as the government's chief representative. "The world today is facing the most conflicts since World War II," he said.
In the face of the current economic crisis, there is a growing recognition that multilateralism is unnecessary. However, the existence of South Korea, which has overcome the horrors of war and is now enjoying freedom, democracy and prosperity, is a testament to the nation’s strength.
"This is evidence that the activities of the Korean People's Liberation Army are effective," he said. "With President Yoon Seok-yeol's vision of becoming a 'global central nation,' we are building a sustainable peace.
Facilitator for the promotion of sustainable development, supporter for sustainable development, and initiator of norms in fields such as AI and plastic pollution.
"We will play a role commensurate with our national power as a member of the Security Council," he said. He also said that, in light of the limitations of the Security Council's ability to address important and urgent issues due to the abuse of veto power by the permanent members,
In order to reform the Security Council in a more effective, democratic and accountable way, Cho proposed to “increase the number of non-permanent members who can serve for a long time.” Furthermore, Cho said that Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has entered into military cooperation with North Korea.
He also expressed regret over the use of his veto to extend the mandate of the Security Council's Panel of Experts on North Korea Sanctions.
