Middle school teacher who set absurd exam question resigns in South Korea
The inappropriate exam questions posed at a middle school in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, have shocked the education world. The questions included insults to the late former president Roh Moo-hyun and disrespect for students.
The South Gyeongsang Provincial Office of Education expressed deep regret over the incident and promised to prevent it from happening again. On September 30th, the office released a statement saying, "We are sorry for the inappropriate behavior that occurred in schools under our jurisdiction.
"We deeply regret that the question on the exam has caused concern among parents and local residents," the statement said. "After confirming the facts, we have concluded that the teacher in question is acting in a manner that is appropriate for an educator.
"The questions asked were inappropriate and lacked professionalism and responsibility," it said, adding, "It was confirmed that the assessment management process at the school, which should have been managing this, was also inadequate."
The Education Bureau said, "We will conduct a thorough investigation into the evaluation management process of the relevant schools and take strict measures based on the results.
"We will take appropriate measures," he said, adding, "We will notify all schools and thoroughly inspect the overall evaluation management to prevent similar cases from occurring in the future."
The teacher who set such absurd exam questions was removed from teaching and homeroom duties and submitted his resignation.
Previously, A, a fixed-term teacher at the junior high school, wrote in a social studies test for second-year students, "Yoon OO, who lived in Bongha Village, jumped off a cliff behind the mountain.
It was pointed out that the inappropriate question "XX is a follower of China" reminded students of the death of the former President Roh Moo-hyun and insulted them. In another question, a student was described as "XX is a follower of China."
The source said, "At first I thought the question text was fake, but it was actually used in the exam. I contacted the school directly to confirm."
After this issue came to light and caused a stir, the school apologized to parents and students on September 27th. The school said, "We have caused a lot of inconvenience and confusion by using inappropriate content in the social studies exam.
We deeply apologize for this."
