On the 30th of last month, a petition was posted in the National Assembly's National Consent Petitions section, asking for "Yeongwol Wrong-Way Driving Accident: Petition to Strengthen Punishment for Drunk Driving."
By the time the video was uploaded, about 5,600 people had agreed to it. The creator, Mr. A, revealed that he was the sibling of Mr. B (32), who died in the Yeongwol wrong-way driving accident.
A said, "This accident was reported every day in the media, and many
"I think that people in the United States are more familiar with this accident than those in the United States," he said, explaining the purpose of the petition. "Rather than digging up an accident that has already happened and lamenting it, I hope that no more similar accidents will occur in Korea."
Mr. A explained, "Two days before the accident, my sibling had moved to Seoul, a place he had always dreamed of, and was imagining a happy future with his wife and two children."
The family that was built with great effort was destroyed so easily. The article also said, "The perpetrator, a non-commissioned officer in the Marine Corps, had a history of being tried by the military for drunk driving and other offences.
"I know. Why did they let someone with a history of drunk driving back behind the wheel? Why did they only give him a light punishment?" he asked.
Mr. A also said, "My brother's wife went to the funeral with bruises on her face and legs. My father-in-law (who was also in the car) was in a wheelchair and my mother-in-law was in the critical care ward.
The child cries every day asking when his father is coming home, and it seems he will never be able to enter the house in Seoul where he had dreamed of a happy future.
A said, "There is no perpetrator (in this case), so there is no punishment. What I can do is to petition the public so that this kind of thing never happens again.
I ask that South Korea's drunk driving laws be strengthened so that the tragic death of my sibling is not in vain."
