National Cancer Center staff may have been exposed to ”radiation”... Nuclear Safety Commission launches accident investigation = South Korea
The Nuclear Safety Commission of Korea announced on the 7th that it has begun an investigation into the radiation exposure accident that occurred at the National Cancer Center. According to the commission's report, the person in charge had received permission to operate a radiation generating device.
The National Cancer Center staff member was in the linear accelerator room at around 12:50 p.m. on the same day when the linear accelerator started operating unexpectedly, causing the accident.
The accident was reported to the committee at 5:22 pm on the same day. After the accident, the exposed staff were quickly transported to the Korea Institute of Nuclear Medicine, and the National Cancer Center was assigned to the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KISA).
Experts from the INS were dispatched to the center. The center has five linear accelerators, which are in use for treating patients. These accelerators are licensed devices under the Nuclear Safety Act.
The committee announced that it will conduct a detailed investigation to assess the circumstances of the incident and the radiation exposure doses.
