Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics.
Tyler Cowen, economist and founder of Marginal Revolution,
Cowen and Alex Tabarrok appeared on a podcast on the 8th (local time) and predicted who will win the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics.
Cowen said it was an unusual choice, but given the opportunity, he would have picked Buterin, the Ethereum co-founder and computer scientist.
While the two exchanged views on the value of theoretical economics, they agreed that Buterin deserved the award because he was a real contributor to monetary economics.
Cowen said, "Vitalik created a platform and a currency. He followed in Satoshi's footsteps, of course, but
What more does it take to win a Nobel Prize?'” Tabarok agreed, saying, “Vitalik is committed to continually improving the design of Ethereum’s mechanisms.
"These contributions are the most prominent among them being the shift from Proof of Work (POW) to Proof of Stake (POS)," he added.
The two also discussed Buterin's warm personality, describing him as one of the cryptocurrency world's leading intellectuals and a likeable person.
But Tabarrok pointed out that Buterin's contributions to cryptocurrency are second only to Bitcoin's anonymous founder. "Satoshi should have deserved the award too, but maybe Satoshi
"Satoshi is probably dead," to which Cowen replied, "I don't know if Satoshi is dead."
The 2024 Nobel Prize winner in Economics will be announced on October 14th.
