"The captain (59 years old) of flight TK204, which departed Seattle the night before, lost consciousness after takeoff," the company said. Crew members on board administered first aid, but the captain did not regain consciousness.
The co-pilot then decided to make an emergency landing, but the captain had already died before the plane landed. The plane crashed into New York City at around 5:57 a.m. (Eastern Time), eight hours after takeoff.
The plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The captain had worked for the airline for 17 years since 2007. The exact cause of the captain's death has not yet been announced.
Turkish Airlines said, "A medical examination conducted in March of this year revealed no health problems that would impede the captain's work."
My heartfelt condolences to all his loved ones."
