It has been revealed that the death of a driver working for the late-night rocket delivery service at Coupang, a major South Korean online retailer, has been recognized as an industrial accident.
According to the Delivery Overwork Death Prevention Committee, the spouse of Jung SEULGI, who died in May this year, filed a lawsuit on the 10th.
The family of the deceased had filed a work-related accident claim, arguing that the cause of death was intense physical labor, mental stress, and accumulated overwork.
The deceased had been working as a driver for Coupang Quickflex since March of last year, but collapsed at home on the afternoon of May 28th of this year. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but died. The cause of death was ventricular fibrillation.
The deceased had a myocardial infarction and a stroke, which is a cerebrovascular disease that is a typical cause of death from overwork. The deceased usually worked six days a week, from 8:30 pm to 7:00 am the next morning, for about 10 hours and 30 minutes a day.
He worked more than 63 hours including night shifts (77 hours if night shifts are increased by 30%) at a convenience store. The contents of his KakaoTalk conversation with an employee of the Coupang Robotics service were also made public, and he said, "I'm in a hurry.
It was revealed that under the pressure of "I'm running like a dog," he responded, "I'm running like a dog." The committee said, "The decision to recognize the death as an industrial accident is based on the fact that Coupang's rocket delivery system was the cause of death from overwork.
"This means that Coupang has caused a stir," he said, adding, "Coupang should immediately offer a sincere apology to the family and take appropriate measures to prevent a recurrence."
