The government announced that it had selected Korean author Han Kang as the winner, and explained the reason for its selection as follows: "Han Kang's powerful and poetic prose style expresses the fragility of human beings while confronting the emotional wounds of history.

The Academy chose "The Boys Are Coming," which V said he read in the military, as the winner. Han Kang wrote "The Boys Are Coming," a full-length novel about the May 18 Democratization Movement in 2014.
The book tells the story of Dongho, a student militiaman, who is killed by gunfire from the martial law army, and Dongho, who loses his own life in the end.
