Japan receives 26.88 million foreign visitors through September, ”spending also the highest ever” = Korean report

The cumulative number of foreign visitors to Japan from January to September exceeded last year's total. Spending by foreign visitors to Japan also hit an all-time high.
The Japan Tourism Agency announced on the 16th that the cumulative spending by foreign visitors to Japan from January to September reached 5.8582 trillion yen.
The figure was announced on the 1st of March. It is the largest ever cumulative figure for the period from January to September. Spending by foreign visitors to Japan in the third quarter was 1.948 trillion yen, a sharp increase of 41% from the same period last year.
By country, China had the highest consumption of 517.7 billion yen, accounting for 30% of the total, followed by Taiwan in second place with 284.4 billion yen, South Korea in third place, and the United States in fourth place.
The average travel expenditure per person was calculated to be 223,000 yen. This is 40% higher than the 163,000 yen for the same period in 2019 due to the weak yen, but is still higher than the 239,000 yen for the previous quarter.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that "total spending from January to September has already exceeded the previous record of 5.3065 trillion yen for the year 2023," and that "the annual spending by foreign visitors to Japan this year is the highest ever."
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced on the same day that the cumulative number of tourists visiting Japan from January to September was 26,882,000.
The number of visitors to Japan exceeded 25,066,350 in the previous month. However, the number of visitors to Japan in September was 2,872,200, a slight decrease from 2,933,000 in August. Some international flights were canceled due to the typhoon.
This is believed to be the influence of the virus. The Nikkei reported that the number of tourists coming from China, Malaysia, the United States, and other countries continues to increase. The number of Chinese visitors to Japan was 652,300, about double the number in the same month last year.
