The unit that North Korea will send to Russia is the 11th Corps, commonly known as the "Storm Corps." According to government sources, North Korea will send about 10,000 troops from four brigades under the Storm Corps.
Approximately 1,500 special forces personnel have already been transported to Vladivostok, Russia, and a second transport operation is scheduled to begin soon.
The Storm Corps, which is said to be stationed in Tokchon City, Pyongan South Province, was created based on the 8th Special Corps.
It was reorganized as the 11th Corps in 1991 and became an independent special operations force in 2017, becoming the fifth independent unit in the Korean People's Army.
The Storm Corps is composed of four warning corps, seven air-ground battle brigades, and three sniper brigades.
At the military parade to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Army in February 2023, the Storm Corps' flag will be displayed along with footage of the unit's training.
In December 2020, the storm troops were deployed to close the China-North Korea border, leading to a shooting and killing incident of a border guard soldier in Podae-ri, Yanggang-do.
Prior to this, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jung Eun inspected the special forces, presumed to be the Storm Forces, on September 11 and October 2.
Chairman Kim said, "Even if war were to break out today, our military would immediately subdue the enemy in one fell swoop and mercilessly defeat them.
"We must be fully prepared to wipe out all the enemies and bring the situation to a complete end," he said, adding, "In the event of an emergency, we must make sure that the enemy is forced to shed blood when they come face to face with our troops."
This is the first time North Korea has sent ground troops overseas. In the past, it sent fighter pilots and psychological warfare troops to the Vietnam War and to Egypt during the Yom Kippur War.
The South Korean government is closely monitoring the impact that North Korea's participation in the Ukraine war could have on the Korean peninsula and the international community. President Yoon Seok-yeol said
An emergency security meeting was held on the same day to examine the impact of North Korea's participation in the Ukraine war on security.
The current situation, in which North Korea shares war support information with Russia and the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea goes beyond the transportation of military supplies to the actual dispatch of troops, poses a serious threat not only to South Korea but also to the international community.
"We share this view," he said, adding, "We will not remain idly ignoring this situation and will respond by mobilizing all available means together with the international community."
