”I cut my hair on my birthday, out of frustration”... Police officers shave their heads on Police Day in South Korea
On the 79th anniversary of Police Day on the 21st, police officers on the front lines shaved their heads in protest against a proposal to improve work guidelines sent to frontline police stations by the National Police Agency.
The National Police Workplace Council held a protest in front of the National Police Agency in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the same day.
"We strongly condemn the GPS monitoring and forced inspections by the National Police Agency, which have violated the human rights of police officers on the ground," said the nine members of the association, including former police union chairman Min Gwang-gi.
"I cut my head on my birthday (Police Day) with a sense of frustration and sadness in my heart," they said in a statement. "The reason we are taking action is because of the double-dealing with the intent to punish lower-ranking police officers in the field."
"It is self-evident that a surveillance system would psychologically pressure police officers, undermining their self-esteem and morale, leading to a decline in the quality of security services, and the resulting damage would be passed on to the general public," he said.
They are tasked with putting together practical measures that reflect the opinions of lower-ranking police officers, ensuring procedural legitimacy in the reorganization process, and ensuring that police officers
They have requested the National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho to improve the working environment for police officers. Recently, police officers on the front lines have voiced their opposition to the National Police Agency's ``Measures to Improve the Supervision and Management System of Local Police Stations.''
The gist of this measure is that if a patrol car dispatched in response to a call does not move for more than two hours, the reason for the car's stop will be entered into the 112 system (pole map).
The information must be entered by field staff or district or police box desk staff. This measure was implemented in August when a mentally disabled woman in her 40s was reported as having run away from home.
The committee was established in response to the incident in which a man was found dead in the back seat of a police car at a police station 36 hours later. On the 15th, a petition calling for the impeachment of Director Cho was submitted to the National Assembly with the consent of the people.
The number of people who have agreed to the bill has exceeded 50,000, and the bill has been referred to the National Diet's Legislation and Judiciary Committee. As of 3:00 p.m. on the same day, 53,798 people had agreed to the bill.
