ソン・ヘギョ主演の復讐劇、大ヒットで8000億ウォン…それでも「知らんぷり」
Song Hye Kyo's revenge drama is a huge hit, earning 800 billion won... but she still ”keeps ignorance”
"Netflix, Again This Year" The Korean representative for Netflix, which earned about 820 billion won (about 88.2 billion yen) in South Korea last year, did not appear at the National Assembly's parliamentary audit this year either.
Netflix Service Korea CEO Sean Thomson said at the National Assembly's Science and Technology Affairs Committee on the 25th that the company is not fulfilling its responsibilities to the domestic market.
The National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee mainly investigated matters related to "Korea market earnings and reinvestment in the K-contents market."
The court requested that Thomson be called as a witness to question the defendants, but he ultimately failed to attend. Instead, the Netflix Service
Only Korea's Director General for Policy and Legal Affairs Jeong Gyo-hwa appeared as a witness.
On the 14th, CEO Thomson wrote in a statement explaining his absence, "I am a member of the legal team at Netflix Inc. (U.S. headquarters) and am currently notified of legal matters outside of Korea, such as the U.S. and Europe.
"When Netflix Service Korea was established in July 2015, he was in charge of the practical matters related to the company's establishment and was registered as the company representative.
"Since the establishment of the Korean corporation, I have not been involved in Korean business," he explained. He added, "I do not know the specifics of the Korean corporation's operations and the current state of Korean business, so it is difficult for me to testify faithfully."
The National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee has requested the CEO of Netflix Service Korea to appear as a witness at every parliamentary audit every year, but he has failed to appear every time for the same reason.
It is inevitable that Netflix's responsibility is being neglected compared to its influence on the Korean market.
Netflix Korea expects its sales to reach 1 trillion won (approximately 10.75 billion yen) last year.
According to Service Korea's 2023 audit report, sales (revenue from subscription membership resales) increased by approximately 50 billion won (5.375 billion yen) compared to 2022.82
The increase in sales at that time was mainly due to the release of Netflix's original content "The Glory Guardian," starring Song Hye Kyo.
This was thanks to the popularity of "Glorious Revenge."
Season 1 will be released in December 2022, followed by Season 2 in March 2023 in Korea.
The series has become a huge hit and has attracted new subscribers. Despite such huge sales, he was asked to attend a National Assembly audit to be questioned about "Korea market revenue and reinvestment in the K-content market."
Netflix Korea has also submitted a letter of reason for its representative's absence this year, making it difficult to avoid criticism. A Netflix Korea official said, "Reginald Sean Thomson will not attend as explained in the letter of reason.
"Currently, unless we change the corporate structure, there is no role for a branch manager in the domestic corporation," he said.
Instead, Jung Gyu-hwa, who is in charge of legal policy, will attend and answer.
"Yes," he explained.
