2024 US presidential candidate Donald Trump has revealed that he is seriously considering abolishing federal income tax in the US and replacing it with tariffs on imports.
Trump recently appeared on the podcast "The Joe Rogan Experience."
Experience" and "William McKinley in the 1890s
"The tariff policies of former President McKinley have brought great prosperity to America, and we must continue to fund our government through those policies today."
Trump said at the time that tariffs generated so much revenue that public officials didn't know what to do with the money.
We were very wealthy. We had too much money. We didn't know what to do with it, so we formed a special committee on tariffs. Their only purpose was to figure out how to use all the money we had.
Critics report that imposing tariffs on imported goods adds a "hidden tax" that increases prices.
But Trump argues that tariffs can increase demand for dollars, protect domestic workers and make U.S. exports more attractive.
Radical proposals for the existing financial system are nothing new for Trump. He has proposed settling the nation's $35 trillion debt with Bitcoin.
"I would like to see the United States give some bitcoin to its creditors," Trump said in an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo.
"If we could do that, we could solve $35 trillion of debt," said asset manager Brian Courchesne.
Courchesne said it would be difficult for the U.S. government to create a strategic reserve of Bitcoin, but that it is not impossible.
He explained that this was not possible.
