Joo Jin Woo, chairman of the People's Power Legal Advisory Committee, submitted a "Memorandum of Opinion Requesting Live TV Broadcast of Defendant Lee Jae Myung's Criminal Case" to the Seoul Central District Court at 3 p.m. on the 4th.
Lee's verdict on charges of violating the Public Offices Election Act will be on the 15th, and on charges of instigating perjury on the 25th. Chairman Joo said, "The court will consider the people's right to know and Park's right to know even if Lee Jae-myung herself does not agree.
"I want the court to consider the precedents of former presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak and allow live broadcasts of the trial," he said. He added, "Chairman Lee Jae-myung is the living power of the huge opposition party.
"I think it's appropriate to make the ruling public because this is an important trial that will determine whether or not he will be able to run in the next presidential election," he said.
"We request Representative Lee's consent to this. For the sake of the people's right to know and their right to defend themselves, we strongly urge him to agree to the public release of the court's verdict."
The Supreme Court's internal rules regarding spectating and filming in courtrooms are based on the public interest and can be amended at the discretion of the presiding judge even if the defendant does not consent.
If it is deemed necessary for the purpose, filming can be done. Previously, the first-instance rulings in the cases of incumbent President Park Geun-hye and incumbent President Lee Myung-bak were broadcast live.
The first trial of the special activity expenses and official recognition interference case and the former president Lee's Dars Fund EMBEZZLEMENT and bribery case was broadcast live, even though both former presidents were absent.
While in office, he was put on trial for violating the Public Offices Election Act and abuse of power, and the Supreme Court's ruling was broadcast live.
