A 39-year-old player was killed by lightning during a local league match at a stadium in the province's Huancayo city. The match was suspended 22 minutes into the first half due to bad weather.
As the players began to leave the field, lightning suddenly struck the stadium, electrocuting eight players at once, 10 seconds after the game had been stopped.
As a result of the accident, one player died on the way to the hospital, one 40-year-old player is in critical condition, and two teenage players and one in their 20s were injured but are not in a life-threatening condition.
In Peru's high altitude, such accidents occur frequently during outdoor sporting events.
