It has been revealed that wreaths sent by two current members of the National Assembly were left at the wedding of a leader of the Chilsung faction, the largest organized crime group in the Busan area.
According to the Busan Police Station and other sources on the 8th, the wedding of Mr. A (60s), a leader of the Chilseong faction, was held at a wedding hall in a hotel in Jung-gu, Busan on the 23rd of last month.
Mr. A, who was once known as the leader of the Chilseong faction's action squad, is said to be receiving executive-level treatment although his influence has declined recently.
Since the 1980s, the Chilsung faction has been in rivalry with the "New 20th Century faction" in Busan, and has engaged in violent crimes in an attempt to gain control.
Their crimes were the subject of the movie "Friends," and in July eight members of two gangs were sentenced to prison for a mass brawl that took place in Busan's biggest shopping district three years ago.
The Central Police Station had deployed about 10 police officers in preparation for any trouble at Mr. A's wedding. However, wreaths from two current Busan lawmakers were placed at Mr. A's wedding.
The two Diet members both explained that they "did not know Mr. A's status and it was a mistake."
B, a member of the Diet, said, "In most cases, we send wreaths in response to requests from various places, including local residents," and "They are not reported to the Diet member himself each time."
"So I had no idea," said C, a former Diet member, who said, "I sent a wreath because a former Diet member told me that an acquaintance of mine was getting married, but I didn't know who the wedding participants were."
He was quoted as saying, "Even the people related to the former Diet member who said he was an acquaintance are now making excuses saying they don't know anything about Mr. A, which is just shocking."
