The ruling party lawmakers should apologize today for spreading obvious false facts and take official corrective measures.
In a statement titled "Thoughts on the Cloth," the Democratic Party of Korea leader Lee Jae-myung said, "I'm sorry to say that Joo Jin-woo, legal advisor for the People Power Party, has spread the false fact that he was against live broadcasting of court trials."
"We demand an apology and correction from the head of the court," the statement said. The statement added, "Neither Representative Lee nor his legal team have expressed any opinion on the propriety of broadcasting the trial live.
"The allegation that we opposed live broadcasting and ignored the public's right to know is a clear lie," he said. "Whether to open the trial to the public is up to the court, and Lee said he will respect the court's decision."
He further stated, "Please apologize by today for spreading such obviously false information and take official corrective measures. If there is no convincing apology or correction, we will not be able to take legal action."
"I warn you that we will take all possible measures, including legal action," he said. Prior to this, in the morning of the same day, Rep. Joo expressed his thoughts on the decision not to allow live broadcasting, saying, "I will respect the court's decision.
"However, we express deep regret that Chairman Lee has put his own human rights first, ignored the people's right to know, and opposed live broadcasting."
Rep. Chu stood up immediately after the first-instance court in the case of Lee's alleged violation of the Public Offices Election Act decided not to broadcast live the sentencing scheduled for the 15th.
The 34th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court, which handled the first trial of Lee's case on suspicion of violating the Public Offices Election Act, said in a court statement this morning, "After taking into consideration all the legal interests involved, we have decided to postpone the recording of the verdict.
"We have decided not to broadcast the event live."
