”Vegetarians are the height of depravity”... Nobel Prize-winning author Han Kang's pastor uncle publishes letter on social media - South Korean media
In a letter posted on social media, Pastor Han Choon-won, uncle of Nobel Prize-winning author Han Kang, described the novel "The Vegetarian" as "the height of decadence."
On the 8th, Pastor Han commented on the novel "The Vegetarian" on social media, "Even if the depiction of the relationship between the brother-in-law and sister-in-law and the scene are necessary and part of the work's structure, they are still subject to criticism."
"If shameless acts are justified, incest, bestiality and cannibalism may also be glorified," he said, adding, "That would be the height of depravity. Such works are unacceptable."
"The family deserves to be criticized as a person who has given up on living in the human community," he wrote. In particular, Pastor Han is a member of the Jeju April 3 Incident.
He described the Korean War as "a tragic product of ideological conflict" and the May 18 Democratization Movement as "a tragic incident that expanded in opposition to the rebirth of a dictatorial regime."
He criticized Han Kang's work, which was written about these issues. Pastor Han said, "It is very dangerous to express a view that is critical from one point of view in a work of art."
"Furthermore, literary writers must write with an impartial attitude, without inciting ideological or regional conflicts and pandering to the power-shaking politicians who seek political gain," he said. "Avoid stirring up wounds from the past."
Regarding Han Kang's book "The Boy Comes," which deals with the May 18 Democratization Movement, he wrote, "My niece is
"I have heard that he has written several works that make it seem as if Korea is an unjust country and therefore not worth living in," he said, adding, "Without President Kim Dae-jung,
"If that had happened, the May 18 Democratization Movement probably would not have happened," he continued. "It is said that the democratization movement was caused by the citizens' earnest desire for democratization, but it is difficult to put into words the cause of that desire.
"It's not easy," he said. "The May 18 Democratization Movement was a righteous resistance against an unjust and brutal usurper, but it failed miserably. That was because the timing was bad.
Regarding Han Kang being the first Asian woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Pastor Han said, "I am grateful to her for her hard work and dedication to the cause of the May 18 Democratization Movement.
"I was overcome with mixed emotions upon hearing the news. Frankly speaking, I felt more shock, surprise and concern than joy," he said. "My brother's (Han Kang's father) family was deeply affected by the Nobel Prize.
"I was worried that this would distance her from salvation and I had a terrible premonition that Korean society would be divided depending on the evaluation of my niece's work."
Pastor Han is not in contact with Han Kang's father, the writer Han Seungwoon. Pastor Han said, "I don't know my niece's phone number or address.
I had no idea about this and was forced to post the letter on social media," he said, adding, "I would like to offer a comprehensive opinion centering on the controversy surrounding my niece's work and make some suggestions regarding her future artistic endeavors."
