US President Sullivan: ”Institutionalizing Japan-US-ROK summits...preparing for any provocations from North Korea”
Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, predicted that "even if the administration changes, the trilateral cooperation system between Japan, the United States and South Korea will continue."
"The meeting is an opportunity to coordinate a response across all sectors, including North Korea's deployment of troops to Ukraine and Russia," Sullivan said on the 14th (local time) regarding President Biden's visit to Peru.
"We are working to institutionalize the trilateral relationship between the leaders of Japan, the United States and South Korea as an enduring feature of U.S. policy in the Asia-Pacific region," he said in an in-flight briefing, adding that he was "conducting administrative work for the trilateral cooperation system."
"This is a real opportunity for us to have discussions at the leadership level and be prepared for any provocations by North Korea, whether that be missile tests or nuclear tests," he added.
The three countries held their first summit in August last year and have decided to make it an annual event.
The second summit will be held in Lima, North Korea on Wednesday. Sullivan said, "North Korea has been testing ballistic missiles in recent weeks, and the possibility of a seventh nuclear test remains a possibility."
"Historically, periods of regime change (in the U.S.) have been times when North Korea has engaged in provocative behavior," he said. "Therefore, we will be cautious from now on.
"We will be watching this very closely until January 20th of next year (when the president takes office)," he added.
