The Swiss cantonal parliament of Bern has passed a resolution to commission a research report on bitcoin mining. The proposal was made by the multiparty Bitcoin Parliamentary Group, which is made up of 23 members of the canton of Bern.
The move to advance a report on bitcoin mining was approved by a vote of 85 to 46. The report will explore ways to utilise surplus energy in the canton and the possibility of cooperating with Swiss bitcoin miners.
The report will examine the potential of Bitcoin mining to contribute to the stability of the power grid, as well as the economic viability of the technology, and the potential for Bitcoin mining to contribute to the stability of the power grid.
According to a local media Bitcoin trainer, the group is in opposition to the US Texans Act, which integrated Bitcoin mining into state energy policy.
Using the state of Sussex as a model, they argued that encouraging Bitcoin mining could attract mining companies and jobs, promote renewable energy, and increase the stability of the power grid.
The report's request is one of several projects the Bitcoin Parliamentary Group has pursued since it was first proposed in March. In September, the Government Council voted against the proposal.
Bern cantonal councillor Samuel Kullmann wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that the debate was "just the usual FUD".
"The proposal was heavily influenced by the logic of the Ethereum Blockchain and missed the point, but it was ultimately passed by a clear majority vote," he said. "This result is a major step forward for Bitcoin."
"This shows that the narrative is changing," he said. The government council said that because the canton of Bern is an energy exporting region, the issue of energy use is not a regional issue, but an international one.
"The energy consumption of data centers is increasing and energy storage technology is developing," he said. "Bitcoin mining is driven by market trends and
Bitcoin is not a legal tender and is therefore not subject to the control of the Swiss National Bank," he added.
