The South Korean government has decided to strengthen its punishment for the "leakage of defense industry technology overseas." The Defense Ministry said, "Recently, damage caused by technology leaks has been occurring frequently across the industrial sector," and "The defense industry, which has a direct impact on national security,
"If defense industry technology is leaked overseas, it could deal a major blow to national security, so we have revised the current laws," he explained.
The new law allows for a maximum of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of up to 2 billion won (approximately 214 million yen) to be imposed on the accused.
Previously, it was possible to punish such offenses with a fine rather than a prison sentence, but from now on, this has been strengthened to make prison time unavoidable. The Ministry of National Defense said, "The implementation of the revised law will strengthen the management of defense industry technology and the national security of the country.
"We expect that measures to prevent leakage will be strengthened," he said, adding, "We will make thorough preparations in all areas to ensure the smooth implementation of the revised law."
