The impeachment motion against South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol was reported to the National Assembly in the early hours of the 5th. It was proposed by the entire opposition party.
The Diet held a plenary session at 12:48 a.m. on the same day, with 188 members in attendance, but the ruling People's Power Party did not participate.
It was reported that 191 opposition lawmakers, excluding National Assembly Speaker Won-sik, have proposed an impeachment motion against President Yoon and an impeachment motion against Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun. The impeachment motion against Kim includes the following:
The Democratic Party of Korea, the largest opposition party, and 170 lawmakers are participating. The Democratic Party of Korea, the Fatherland Reform Party, the New Reform Party, the Progressive Party, the Social Democratic Party and other six opposition parties held a parliamentary session at 2:43 pm the previous day.
The impeachment motion must be reported to the plenary session held immediately after it is proposed, and a vote must be taken within 72 hours of the report, 24 hours after the report.
The vote is expected to take place as early as the 6th. The plenary session also voted on the "Draft of Audit Requests for Violations of the Constitution and Laws by the Ministry of Justice, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and Public Prosecutors."
The bill was passed by 185 votes in favor and three against out of 188 members present. Reform Party members Lee Jun-seok, Cheon Haram, and Lee Juyeon
After the vote, Park Chan-dae, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, tried to present the matter of “agreement to change the agenda” to Chairman Woo, but Chairman Woo responded, “First, we need the power of the people.
In response, Park responded, "We will first proceed with the discussions, and if the discussions are successful, we will propose it, but if they are not successful, we will submit a proposal for amended agreement."
The cases in which the Democratic Party attempted to change the agenda on this day included the appointment of Choi Jae-hae, the head of the Board of Audit and Inspection, and Lee Chang-soo, the chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office.
The Democratic Party of Korea's chief spokesman Cho Seung-rae told reporters after the general assembly, "We are pushing for the impeachment of the Central District Prosecutors' Office and the Board of Audit and Inspection.
"We will agree to change the agenda and resume at 10 a.m. to move forward with the relevant impeachment motion," he said. Prior to this, the People's Power Party announced at its general assembly on the same day that it would impeach President Yoon.
The party has decided to oppose impeachment as its policy. Kwak Gyu-taek, the party's chief spokesman, told reporters at an emergency general meeting of lawmakers held at the National Assembly the previous night, "We accept the impeachment motion as the party's policy.
In response to a question about whether the party's policy was to oppose the impeachment of President Yoon, Kwak said, "It is in fact the party's policy."
The party reportedly approved by applause its policy of opposing the impeachment motion against President Yoon.
