According to international security standards, if an explosive is hidden in a shoe, it must be 3.5cm high to be effective at killing someone. This is based on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's National Aviation Security Plan.
In the past, suspicious shoes were inspected individually, but the vague standards caused confusion. The circular security inspection machines were introduced at Incheon Airport in 2017, and 41 are currently in operation.
This equipment uses ultra-high frequency waves to enable fast and accurate testing. However, it has been pointed out that the accuracy of testing below the ankle is low. The strengthening of shoe inspections is aimed at addressing these issues.

"We plan to take measures to address this issue," he said.
