Park Se-hyeon (49, 29th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute), head of the special investigation headquarters for the prosecution's emergency martial law (Seoul High Prosecutor General), held a press briefing on the afternoon of the 8th.
In response to a question from reporters about whether the president would be indicted on charges of treason, he said, "Many related complaints have been received and are being investigated one by one," and "If a complaint or indictment is filed, procedurally (the president will be indicted as a suspect)."
"It is correct to investigate the two cases of abuse of power and treason," Park said.
He said, "The facts of this case can be summed up in one sentence: public officials abused their authority and started a riot with the aim of violating the national constitution."
"These are elements of the crimes of abuse of power and treason, and if you look at the Public Prosecutors' Office Act, it's obvious that prosecutors can investigate crimes that are directly related to crimes that prosecutors can investigate, including abuse of power."
Regarding the possibility of a joint investigation with the police, he revealed, "We have proposed cooperation and joint investigations with the police in the past, and are willing to respond at any time."
Previously, it was reported that the police had rejected the prosecution's proposal for a joint investigation, on the grounds that the crime of treason was outside the scope of the prosecution's direct investigation.
"I don't think it's important who conducts the initial investigation, but what's important is a swift and strict investigation into the truth and punishment," Park said.
"The police are primarily investigating the suspects, but if there are any additional charges, they will be referred to the prosecution," he said.
"We will do everything in our power to ensure that this does not happen," he said, adding, "We are conducting a strict investigation in accordance with the law and principles, regardless of the person's rank, so I ask the public to trust us and keep an eye on us."
