High-level Japan-US-ROK meeting on North Korean nuclear issue held to ”minimize diplomatic vacuum following state of emergency in South Korea”
On the 9th, the representatives of Japan, the United States and South Korea on North Korea's nuclear program said, "We will closely monitor the possibility of provocations from North Korea, steadily manage the situation going forward based on full cooperation, and will respond firmly if provocations occur."
Cho Ku-rae, director of the Foreign Ministry's Foreign Affairs Bureau, spoke in Tokyo on the same day with North Korean nuclear ambassador Hiroyuki Namazu and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink.
The meeting was held as part of the Camp David nuclear talks between the US, Japan, South Korea and North Korea to minimize the diplomatic vacuum following the December 3 emergency martial law imposed by South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol.
The significance of this is in implementing the follow-up measures of the Korea-Korea summit. The representatives of the three countries agreed that "trilateral cooperation on North Korea is extremely important," and stated that they would continue to take measures to improve the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.
They also shared their assessment of the current situation and reaffirmed their intention to share trends and strengthen strategic cooperation to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and expressed their support for North Korea to cease its provocations and confrontational words and actions and for Japan, the United States, and the ROK to respond unconditionally to the situation.
The representatives of the three countries responded by saying, "The illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a serious threat to peace and stability not only in Europe but also on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia."
They agreed to continue to lead the international community in a firm and united response. They also agreed to take measures to cut off North Korea's procurement of key funds and resources used in its illicit nuclear and missile development.
The three countries also agreed to continue cooperating and to evaluate the efforts made to date to ensure the implementation of sanctions against North Korea.
"We welcome the establishment of the Security Council and will use it to lead the international community in strengthening the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions," he said.
They agreed that "China's constructive role is important," and that "communication with China must be strengthened."
