”100,000 won per citizen” - South Korea seeks compensation for mental damages from President Yoon
Citizens who have suffered mental damage such as anxiety and fear due to President Yoon Seok-yeol's state of emergency are filing a lawsuit against President Yoon seeking damages.
On the 10th, the "Association for Preparing a Lawsuit for Compensation for Yoon Seok-yeol's Rebellious Activities" announced that they would be seeking compensation of 10,000 yen per person for mental damages against Yoon Seok-yeol personally.
The group preparing the lawsuit said in a proposal that it would file a lawsuit seeking compensation of 10,000 won (approximately 10,000 yen).
"Not only is it unconstitutional, but it is the opinion of many legal scholars that it constitutes a crime of treason under the criminal code, and it is the judgment of most of the people," he said, adding, "Each citizen of the Republic of Korea is bound by the sovereignty of the people guaranteed by the Constitution.
"The right to constitute a constitutional body based on the principle of parliamentary democracy was violated and I received physical threats," he said.
"These crimes have spread to such an extent that they should be held liable not only under the Constitution and criminal law, but also civilly," he said. "Anyone who points a gun at the people will surely be defeated and destroyed.
"We must ensure that such unconstitutional acts cannot be attempted again in the history of constitutional government," he emphasized. The current lawsuit was filed at the time of the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in late 2016.
The initiative was proposed by Lee Geum-gyu, a lawyer who served as legal representative for the National Assembly. There is no fee for hiring a lawyer, and all winnings are donated.
Lawyer Lee also posted a notice stating, "The public should have the right to claim damages for torts.
"I plan to file the first private lawsuit seeking compensation of 100,000 won per person in the name of damages," he said.
