First phone call between Japan and South Korea's foreign ministers since ”martial law”... ”Current relationship to be maintained”
South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-gyul exchanged views with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya over the phone on the domestic situation and Japan-South Korea relations, including the recent state of emergency and the presidential impeachment.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 11th, Minister Cho spoke with Foreign Minister Iwao for about 20 minutes from 7:20 pm that day.
Minister Cho explained the current domestic situation and the government's efforts to ensure stable national administration, and stated that the Korean government will maintain the current tone of Japan-Korea relations while promoting consistency and continuity.
They also agreed to continue to steadily advance preparations for the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and the ROK next year, and to maintain close communication at all levels.
The Japanese media also reported on the phone call between the Japanese and South Korean diplomatic chiefs on the same day. According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Foreign Minister Iwao told Minister Cho, "We will continue to support the important Japan-South Korea relationship under any circumstances."
"I believe that my position will not change and that I have confidence in the strength of South Korea's democracy," Naoto Kan said. In addition, Naoto Kan said, "The political situation in South Korea is extremely fluid and the situation is changing every moment, but we will continue to take important measures.
"The key is to maintain close communication from the perspective of regional peace and stability," the paper added.
