The former Thai Prime Minister has called for research into cryptocurrencies.
Shinawatra, in a recent speech at the Hua Hin Intercontinental Hotel, said the Thai government is researching cryptocurrencies and conducting sandbox experiments.
"There are already many cryptocurrencies. There is talk that in the future, there will be more currencies than nations.
"The Thai people must understand this and think deeply about it," he said. Thaksin added, "The upcoming Trump administration's trade tariffs and Trump's decision to pay off the national debt with Bitcoin are also major issues."
"The idea that the digital economy will be a big step forward is another reason to explore and understand the digital economy," he added.
The regulatory sandbox provides a deregulated environment for companies to experiment with early-stage financial technologies and allows them to comply with national regulatory requirements.
The government can now try new things without worrying about legal sanctions from the bureau. The Pheu Thai party also plans to launch a tax deduction for Thailand's 45 million residents in July 2024 to boost the economy.
The government made good on its promise to hand out digital cash to those who met the program's eligibility requirements, giving out 10,000 baht, the equivalent of about $280.
