Former defense minister claims emergency martial law reflects president's will - South Korea
Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who was arrested by South Korean prosecutors for engaging in important duties related to the civil war, said, "During this state of emergency, we are trying to hand over a decent country to future generations.
"The mission was a reflection of the President's important will," he said, revealing that the three commanders who carried out the mission were illegally detained.
In a statement released through his legal team on the 17th, Kim said, "The emergency martial law was imposed by the National Assembly.
"It was intended to sound the alarm against abuse of the national constitution and acts akin to civil war, and to dispel public suspicions about election fraud."
Kim also said, "We must not tolerate pro-North Korean forces lurking in South Korean society.
"It is the president's will to wipe out anti-national forces and hand over a decent country to future generations," he said, adding, "I am sorry that I cannot fulfill the wishes of the president and all of you."
He also said, "Three commanders who carried out their assigned duties according to the will of the president and the orders of their ministers have been illegally detained. Many other subordinates and soldiers are suffering as a result of illegal investigations."
"With the determination to save our country, let us fight together to the end for the future of the Republic of Korea. This is just the beginning. I will fight with you to the end," Kim said.
Meanwhile, Kim's lawyers Lee Ha-san and Yoo Seung-soo said, "The prosecution violated the investigation guidelines set out by Rep. Park Seong-won of the Democratic Party of Korea.
On the same day, Rep. Park, Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung, Seoul Supreme Prosecutors' Office Chief (Chief of the Prosecutor's Office's Special Investigation Headquarters for the Emergency Martial Law), and Lee Chang-kyu
(Lee Chan-Gyu) announced that he had filed a complaint with the High-Ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Agency, which investigated Kim and the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's Public Prosecutors' Office. The two lawyers also filed a complaint with the High Prosecutors' Office's Chief Prosecutor, Park, and the Seoul Eastern Detention Center the day before.
The ministry also filed a complaint against Park Kyung-seon, the director of the facility, and other officials with the Public Officials Crimes Investigation Agency on suspicion of abuse of power.
