According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Cho held a 20-minute telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Iwao Naoto that morning, during which they exchanged views on the situation in South Korea and the future of Japan-South Korea relations.
"Our government is steadily managing national affairs under the acting authority system, and we will steadily maintain the diplomatic foundation, including the development of Korea-Japan relations," Cho said.
"There is nothing to be concerned about even in normal economic activities," he said, adding, "We hope to continue economic cooperation between the two countries." The two foreign ministers also said, "With the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea approaching in a week,
The two sides agreed to "steadily prepare to make this a meaningful year in terms of bilateral relations." The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "In order to respond to the severe international situation, including the North Korea issue, we will strengthen the Korea-Japan and Korea-U.S.-Japan Cooperation Forums.
"We agreed to unite our forces and continue to maintain close communication at all levels."
