Court and Lee Jae-myung select public defender for Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung's second trial for election law violations (South Korea)
A South Korean court has appointed a public defender to represent Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, who was sentenced to lose his seat in parliament in the first trial for violating the Public Offices Election Act, in his appeal.
According to legal circles on the 23rd, the Seoul High Court notified Lee that a public defender had been selected that day. Prior to this, the court had notified Lee on the 17th that he would not be selecting a public defender.
A notice for the selection of a public defender had been sent. However, if Representative Lee submits a notice of appointment of a private defender, the selection of a public defender will be cancelled. Representative Lee received a notice of receipt of the court record on the 18th.
According to the Criminal Procedure Law, the defendant must submit a statement of grounds for appeal within 20 days of receiving the notice of receipt of the case record, but the deadline for filing is the 7th of next month.
For this reason, it is expected that Representative Lee will complete the selection of a private lawyer to prepare the grounds for appeal within this period.
