South Korea sees big increase in part-time workers, low quality employment
The Korea Employers Federation announced "Changes and Implications for Part-time Workers Over the Last 10 Years." According to the report, by 2023, there will be 3.873 million part-time workers in Korea.
This represents an increase of 1.838 million people between 2014 and 2023, a larger increase than the 963,000 increase in regular employees over the same period.
Among part-time workers, the percentage of those who have voluntarily chosen to work part-time will be 59.8% in 2023, up from 47.7% ten years ago.
This is a large increase. Many people chose part-time work of their own volition because they were "satisfied with working conditions," which indicates that perceptions of part-time work have improved.
On the other hand, when looking at part-time workers by educational level, 29.8% have a college degree or higher, while 70.2% have a high school degree or lower. 64.7% have a college degree or higher, while 35.
The number of "good" part-time jobs has increased 3.2-fold over the past decade to 545,000, but this still represents only 14.
The rate is low at 0.1%. There is no definition of "good part-time employment," but it generally means stable employment that is not discriminated against compared to full-time workers in terms of benefits and other aspects.
