The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported on the 26th that defense-related spending will increase to 8.67 trillion yen for fiscal year 2025 in order to fundamentally strengthen defense capabilities.
This is an increase of about 750 billion yen from the 2024 fiscal year, making it the largest amount ever. The Japanese government will revise the "Three Major Security Documents" in December 2022 and will increase the defense-related budget for the 2027 fiscal year.
The government teased that it would increase defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) and set aside about 43 trillion yen for five years. Since then, it has steadily promoted defense spending increases.
Along with defense spending, social security-related spending on medical care, nursing care, pensions, and other areas has expanded to 38.28 trillion yen in preparation for an aging population.
Reflecting the increases in these departments, the overall budget for fiscal year 2025 was set at 115.54 trillion yen, 3 trillion yen more than the previous year.
The government plans to approve the budget proposal at a cabinet meeting on the 27th at the earliest.
