Daejeon City, South Korea, to offer marriage subsidies to newlywed couples aged 18-39 for the first time... 5 million won for those married for more than six months
On the 26th, Daejeon city in central South Korea started offering marriage subsidies to young couples for the first time. According to the city, the subsidies are available to citizens aged between 18 and 39, and will be distributed to young couples from January 1st to 4th of this year.
The conditions are that the marriage registration for the first marriage was submitted after this month, and that the couple had lived in Oda City for more than six months by the date of application. However, remarriages and foreigners are not eligible.
Marriage subsidies are paid if applicants meet all three requirements: age, marriage, and residence.
Couples who meet the requirements will be paid 2.5 million won per person, for a total of 5 million won (approximately 540,000 yen). After verifying eligibility based on the application, the couples can finally open a special account.
As of the 23rd, a total of 10,020 people have applied for the marriage subsidy. This policy in Daejeon is one of the main policies of Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang Woo, and the city
An additional 26 billion won in supplementary budget has been set aside for this purpose. 13 billion won has been allocated to the general budget for next year. Mayor Lee said, "Since the announcement of the marriage subsidy support program, we have been waiting for a long time for young people to get married.
"I hope this will be good news for the newlywed couples who are looking forward to this new venture," he said. "I hope that we can ease the economic burden on young people even a little, and that we will continue to make this a city where young people can settle down and build happy families."
Mayor Lee also said, "We are considering raising the age limit and providing subsidies to couples who remarried at a young age, as there are calls for this."
"There are local governments that provide marriage subsidies, and we have instructed them to consider whether the scope of these subsidies can be extended to young people who remarry," he added.
Meanwhile, some local governments, such as Nonsan City in South Chungcheong Province, have raised the age at which they offer marriage subsidies to young couples.
The age limit is set at 45. Nonsan City provides 7 million won to couples who are between 18 and 45 years old as of the date of submitting their marriage registration and where at least one spouse is getting married for the first time.
