On the 29th, Jeju Airlines Flight 7C2216, carrying 181 passengers, crashed into the runway wall upon landing at Muan International Airport, causing a fire that killed 179 people.
Rescue authorities, including the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, announced on the same day that 179 people had been rescued from the crash site at Muan International Airport. The only survivor of the accident was a flight attendant rescued from the rear of the aircraft during the initial search.
The identities of the deceased were being confirmed through fingerprint matching and other methods, and as of 8:38 p.m. on the same day, the identities of 77 people had been confirmed.
There were 181 people on board, including 175 passengers, four cabin crew members and two pilots. 173 of the passengers were identified as Korean, and the remaining two were Thai.
Judging from the passengers' addresses, most of them were from Jeollanam-do, Gwangju, where Muan Airport is located.
The only survivors were two flight attendants, making this the most fatal aircraft accident in South Korea.
Prior to the Jeju Air accident, the deadliest aircraft accident to occur in South Korea was the Asiana Hainan crash in 1993, which killed 66 people.
Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 attempted a belly landing on the runway at Muan Airport at around 9:03 a.m. with the landing gear not lowered, but collided with the outer wall, destroying most of the aircraft.
The accident resulted in the building being engulfed in flames.
