South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol's legal team has indicated its intention to submit a statement of opinion to the Seoul Western District Court on the afternoon of the 30th regarding the arrest warrant requested by the High-Ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Agency.
On the same day, Yoon Kap-geun, a lawyer representing President Yoon, protested, saying, "The arrest warrant was requested by an agency that has no investigative powers." He also argued that the Public Prosecutors' Office does not have the power to investigate the crime of treason.
On the other hand, the Public Prosecutor's Office has determined that it is possible to investigate the allegations of insurrection because they are related to allegations of abuse of power, based on the Public Officials Crime Investigation Agency Act.
The law also allows investigations into any directly related crimes that become known during the investigation process. The Public Prosecutors' Office has requested President Yoon to appear three times so far, but he did not comply with the ultimatum until the day before.
As a result, an arrest warrant was requested on the morning of the 30th. If the court issues the warrant, the plan is to execute it on an incumbent president, a first in history.
It has also been pointed out that there may be physical confrontations during the execution of the arrest warrant. Recently, the National Guard has suspended the execution of the Joint Investigation Headquarters due to military secrets.
